Transport
Taxi from the airport at Bourgas will cost around 60 lev (£20.00) and we also have an English operated transfer service available. They can also take you shopping or help in translation etc if you are considering buying property in Bulgaria. Well worth considering especially inland as the coast is being saturated. Just let us know your requirements.
What to do?
From the apartment you can walk to Sunny Beach. Hire a bike at the Victoria Hotel (not Victoria Palace) on the front and barter if you want more than a day. Nessebar is well worth a visit just 10k away by boat, walk or bike. In Sunny Beach you will find lots of companies offering trips. Sozopol is worth a visit and we had a great day on a jeep safari trip.
Currency Exchange
We were told not to change money at the street exchanges but go to a hotel or bank. Hotel/bank rate is only 260 lev to £ but street currency shops will be £276+. Go to the ones with the Crown sign as they are the most reputable. Change a small amount and keep their flyer and when you go back next time you get a higher rate. If you see a better rate and no crown sign – beware. You might get slipped other currency or blanks in the middle if you are changing a lot.
Taxis
Say where you want to go and fix the price – don't go by the metre.
Car hire
Not cheap and be careful – we got a real banger that konked just when overtaking a couple of times.
Drinks - Shopping
Local beer Kamenitza is excellent and our favourite Bulgarian red wine is Mavrud. Heard the shopping is good and cheap in Bourgas. We went to Metro which is just on the outskirts and rather like a Macro here. Prices fantastic and bought Mavrud Reserve at 9 lev a bottle and it is 13 lev in shops. Need to take your passport and get a day pass.
